Samsung Galaxy Note III confirmed for September 4 debut

Samsung was rumored to have selected September 4 as the date to unveil the Galaxy Note III, and the Korean manufacturer has now confirmed that it will continue its streak of launching a large smartphone with stylus at the IFA Berlin trade show. Samsung today has sent out invitations for its next Samsung Unpacked event, and the company has made it painfully obvious what to expect when the curtains go up next month.
The invitation shows the Unpacked logo in multiple colors that looks like it was drawn with some kind of artistic utensil. I'll go out on a limb and say perhaps it might have been an S Pen. It then has another box that says "Note the Date?" to reference the Galaxy Note.
Now that Samsung has made it obvious we will see a new Galaxy Note III on the rumored date, we have to wonder if the other whispers from last week might be true as well. Asia Economic suggested that the Galaxy Note III will have a 5.7-inch AMOLED display, an Exynos 5 Octa processor, and 3GB of RAM. The website also said that Samsung might use that date to launch a new smart watch.

Alleged renders of BlackBerry Z30 and Z15 leak

BlackBerry OS 10 is still struggling to make a serious impact, but a couple of new devices might be just what the doctor prescribed to get things right. We just got to see renders of the BlackBerry Z30 and BlackBerry Z15, which will allegedly be joining the company's portfolio in the near future.
The BlackBerry Z30 isn't actually a new smartphone - we've seen it before under the codename BlackBerry A10. The info about the name change comes from a leaked official tutorial, so it's a pretty certain detail.

BlackBerry Z30 renders
As you might remember, the BlackBerry Z30/A10 is expected to feature a 5" OLED screen of 720p resolution and a Qualcomm chipset, consisting of two 1.7GHz Krait cores, a quad-core Adreno GPU and 2GB of RAM.
Moving on to the BlackBerry Z15, you have to keep your salt shakers at a hands distance. This one is far from being certain to exist and the rendered images themselves don't seem too trustworthy either. Anyway, the source points to this as the first slider in the BlackBerry 10 family.

BlackBerry Z15
We didn't get any other specs for the BlackBerry Z15, but if it turns out to be more than just a fan-made mockup, we are sure those will follow shortly.

HTC One Max shows its face for the first time, 5.9" display in tow

We heard about the existence of a bigger 6-inch version of the HTC One flagship called HTC One Max about three weeks ago. It is supposed to run on the Snapdragon 800 chipset and hit the shelves this September - about the same as the Galaxy Note III.
It seems the HTC One Max is a real deal after all and today we get to see its face for the first time.

As you can see the HTC One Max looks just like the other two members of the One family - the original One and the HTC One mini - it has dual speakers at the front, aluminum unibody and a polycarbonate strip that runs along the sides of the phone.
Rumor has it the HTC One Max will feature a 5.9" 1080p display and a Snapdragon 800 chipset with a quad-core 2.3GHz Krait 400 processor, Adreno 330 graphics and 2GB of RAM. The rest of the rumored specs include 4MP UltraPixel camera with OIS, 16GB expandable storage, a 3300mAh battery and a 9.4mm profile.
The HTC One Max should launch running on Android 4.3 JB skinned with HTC Sense 5.5.
The source of the leak says the HTC One Max is undergoing testing in China and the Chinese users will be getting three different versions for China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom.

Sony becomes first manufacturer to confirm Android 4.3 plans

Following Google's announcement of Android 4.3 yesterday, existing Android smartphone owners immediately began wondering when their phones would receive the software upgrade. HTC and Samsung would say only that they are evaluating Android 4.3 in order to see how it will fit into their product plans. In other words, the companies said they aren't making any promises and won't provide any timetable for when Galaxy S 4 or HTC One owners can expect to get an update notification.
Sony, on the other hand, has at least decided to ease some fears and confirm which devices will get Android 4.3. The company is still working to upgrade the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL to Android 4.2 in August but Sony says those phones will also be in line to get Android 4.3. Sony has confirmed that the following devices will receive Android 4.3 at an undisclosed date:
- Xperia Z
- Xperia ZL
- Xperia ZR
- Xperia Z Ultra
- Xperia Tablet Z
- Xperia SP

Samsung Galaxy Note III and Samsung smart watch launching September 4

Please note that this story is based upon rumor and/or speculation.
The Samsung Galaxy Note III is expected to be announced at the IFA trade show in Berlin, the same place where the first two Android smartphone-meets-tablet devices were unveiled. According to new reports, the Note III won't be the only Android product that Samsung debuts at IFA.
Asia Economic reports that the Samsung Galaxy Note III will be unveiled September 4th at IFA 2013. The phone is said to have a 5.7-inch AMOLED display, a new Exynos 5 Octa processor, and 3GB of RAM. On its own, that's not surprising at all given that each announcement at IFA has been an incremental improvement on the Galaxy Note released the previous year. One would expect the Galaxy Note III to have a bigger screen and newer processor to make the new phone better than the last.
One might not have expected Samsung to announce its own Android-connected smart watch, which Asia Economic says will also take place. Samsung revealed in March that it is making a smart watch in order to compete with the rumored Apple iWatch. It will also have to contend with the popular Pebble smart watch, the Sony Smartwatch 2, and even smart timekeepers from Google and LG.

Samsung Galaxy Folder leaks again, named Galaxy Golden

It seems Samsung is actually going to really do that clamshell Android smartphone after all. When we first saw it, we were hoping that the Galaxy Folder is merely a dead prototype, but a new live image suggests it's actually still in development and edging closer to release.
At the start of the week we saw a leaked manual detail the specs of the smartphone - a couple of WVGA AMOLED screens plus Snapdragon 400 chipset with a 1.7GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU and 2GB of RAM. There will be a couple of cameras too as well as rich connectivity options including LTE.
Now we also got to learn the possible name of the upcoming Samsung smartphone. According to the latest gossip it will be marketed as Samsung Galaxy Golden in South Korea. It's unclear if the smartphone will make it to other markets and if it will retain the same name there.
If it does, would you be interested in getting a clamshell Android smartphone? Share with the rest of us in the comments section below.

Photos of BlackBery Z10 Porsche Design leak

The last time we saw a Porsche Design phone, it was the BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981. Some new leaked photos today show a new version of the BlackBerry Z10, which bears the same unmistakable design traits.
The unannounced phone reportedly has the model name BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9982.

Beside the photos, there is not an awful lot of extra information about the smartphone. We only get to know that the handset will be priced to match the luxury branding. The BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9982 is said to cost more than USD$2000. This hardly comes as a surprise, given the fact that the older model, the BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981, which was released back in 2011, still retails for about $2000.

Motorola’s Moto X Phone’s Specs and Design Appear in Leaked Photos

Moto-x-leakMotorola’s Moto X phone has allegedly showed its face yet again in a leaked image tweeted by@EVleaks. The photo shows a rather handsome looking handset, with what appears to be some kind of checker or houndstooth pattern on its rear panel. The Motorola logo, which was spotted on previous leaked images also makes an appearance. The front of the leaked handset features three virtual Android buttons for Home, Back and Recent Apps.

6-inch quad-core WP devices coming later this year

Microsoft is building up a huge update to Windows Phone. Dubbed Blue, the General Distribution Release 3 (GDR3), will likely land in 2014 with a notification center, improved multitasking and updated core apps in tow. According to sources Microsoft will be releasing some of the improvements meant for Blue later this year - support for larger screens (5" and 6"), 1080p resolution and quad-core chipsets (likely the Snapdragon 600 and 800 series).
So it's likely that we'll see Windows Phone 8 phablets with much improved hardware before the end of the year. Microsoft has reportedly been trying to offer speedier updates but had issues with chipset testing and bugs along the way.
Meanwhile, Redmond has also released the changelog for the upcoming WP8 GDR2 update - it will bring improved Xbox Music (easier download of music), FM Radio embedded in the Music+Videos app (select phones) and the new Data Sense aoo, which helps you regulate your phone's data usage. There's also improved HTML5 support for Internet Explorer, and the ability to set a Lens as default cameraapp. The GDR2 update will come to the Nokia Lumia lineup as a side dish to the Lumia Amber update, which will bring Smart Camera among other goodies.

Image of Verizon's Moto X leaks, LTE in tow

The upcoming smartphone from Motorola has been the talk of the town ever since we heard about it for the first time. The Moto X has been leaked numerous times and recently, we also saw the device with Eric Schmidt, the Google Executive Chairman at the on-going Allen & Co. annual conference in Sun Valley.
Now, the image of the Verizon bound Moto X has surfaced and the latest leak reveals the presence of the LTE radio in the smartphone. The image hints us that the upcoming device from Motorola might be running a newer version of Android.
Interestingly, the background behind the on-screen soft-keys looks semi-transparent in contrast to the solid black bar on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. However, this could well be a software customization, but with Android 4.3 around the corner, there is every chance that we are looking at what could be a new look for the stock Android launcher.
The Moto X will be assembled in the United States and the smartphone is expected to be announced in August.

Image of BlackBerry A10 with 5-inch display leaks

An image of what is reportedly the BlackBerry A10, an upcoming BB 10 smartphone, has been leaked. The photo confirms that the handset will be build around a 5" display.
The source claims that the BlackBerry A10, which is codenamed Aristo, will be equipped with a 1,280 x 720 pixel display, like its Z10 predecessor, rather than a full HD screen as available on most recent high-end smartphones.
Other BlackBerry A10 we know so far include a Snapdragon chipset with a 1.5 GHz quad-core Krait processor along with 2 GB of RAM and an 8 megapixel primary camera.
The design of the BlackBerry A10 looks quite similar to that of the BlackBerry Z10 except that this time the piece at the bottom is colored white, rather than black.
BlackBerry A10 will run on BlackBerry 10 OS, but unfortunately, there is no word on the pricing and the launch date of the smartphone.

LG Optimus G2 launching on August 20, Nexus 5 on October 5?

LG Optimus G2 launching on August 20, Nexus 5 on October 5?

The day after LG sent out invites for the Optimus G2 unveiling, a massive leak gave us an up-close look at the device. The event is planned for August 7, but the device will launch in its home market a couple of weeks later on August 20 according to the new info.
The Optimus G2 will have a 5.2" IPS display with 1080p resolution and a razor thin bezel (which we saw in the photos). It will launch with Android 4.2.2 running on a Snapdragon 800 chipset with four Krait 400 cores clocked at 2.3GHz and 2GB of RAM (LG is reportedly considering moving up to 3GB). The chipset also enables 150Mbps LTE-Advanced 4G connectivity. A removable 2,700mAh battery will feed all this.
The camera is pegged at 13MP with unusual buttons right next to it, which will serve multiple functions. There are dual-speakers on the bottom.
The LG Optimus G2 is supposedly based on work LG is doing on the Nexus 5, but that will be announced only after the G2 – October 5 says the rumor. The Nexus successor will reportedly bring Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, though we've barely started seeing 4.2 Jelly Bean come out.

More images of the alleged budget iPhone shells leak

More images of the alleged budget iPhone shells leak

The latest leak relating to the alleged line of budget iPhones - which have been called iPhone Lite or iPhone mini in several places - once again comes from none other than Sonny Dickson.
Dickson, leaked the alleged pricing of the smartphones last week and has now brought another piece of the puzzle through his Twitter account. He posted a new set of images, showing off what's either a new color palette, or an image that's not as aggressively oversaturated as previous ones may have been.

Either way, the budget range of iPhone models is said to start at $349 for the 16GB model, and are expected to be released as early as September, although no official confirmation has yet been made by Apple.

Motorola DROID family photo surfaces: Mini, Ultra and MAXX

Motorola DROID family photo surfaces: Mini, Ultra and MAXX

evleaks is on fire today, and following the leaked camera sample of the Motorola DROID Ultra, now the popular leakster has outed an official photo of the front panels of the Droid Mini, Ultra and MAXX.
The photo reveals the design of the 2013 Motorola DROID series of phones. In a true Moto fashion, they are boasting Kevlar encasing, which helps not only durability but also keeping the weight in check. The company has also decided to go for capacitive keys instead of onscreen software ones.
Apparently, Motorola's plan for the 2013 RAZR/DROID lineup includes a Mini, which we reckon will replace the Intel-powered RAZR i and its Snapdragon-tasting RAZR M twin. In addition, there's going to be a MAXX variation of the Ultra, which as the name suggest, is built around a huge battery. The current-gen RAZR MAXX has a gigantic 3300mAh battery, and the 2013 DROID MAXX's battery should easily match or even beat that capacity.
Meanwhile, another leak, this time of a Motorola DROID Ultra advertisement storyboard, suggests that the phone will be able to last two days without the need of a recharge. There's also a hint of an advanced voice control software, but it may just be part of an upcoming Google Now update, rather than a new software feature by Motorola.

You can read how the advert would play out and see the key features outlined in it.
That's all the information we've got at that point. The Motorola DROID Mini remains a total enigma at this point, but as the leaks keep pouring, we'll probably know much more about it in the coming days and weeks.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra vs Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Sony Xperia Z Ultra vs Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Phablet segment is ruled by Samsung and their Note devices, with the delivery of Note 2 they managed to additionally improve their position on this market. Until now we did not have a real opponent that could jeopardize their position but it seams that Sony Xperia Z Ultra is a quite capable of doing this. As a result we are delivering comparison of Sony Xperia Z Ultra and Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
The Galaxy Note 2 is a 5.5-inch smartphone with a capacitive stylus, Super AMOLED display and a quad-core Exynos processor. It’s fast, has a long battery life and puts out nice visuals on a sizable panel of glass.

Galaxy Note III to be unveiled on September 4 with 5.7" display

The next generation Galaxy Note phablet from Samsung is one of the most anticipated devices of the year, so understandably rumors about it aren't hard to come by. According to latest report the Galaxy Note III will be announced two days before IFA 2013 kicks off - on September 4.

The report also says Samsung Galaxy Note III is said to sport a 5.7" Super AMOLED display, rather than the 6" unit that was most frequently mentioned so far. The 1080p resolution is still expected to feature a Snapdragon 800 chipset or an Exynos 5 Octa processor along with 3 GB of RAM.
Furthermore, the third generation Galaxy Note phablet is said to come out with a 13 megapixel rear camera and will be slightly thinner than the Galaxy Note II with its profile measuring 8mm.
Unfortunately, there is no official word from Samsung just yet, but the IFA 2013 launch seems inevitable, considering the strong competition in the phablet club.

Alleged Motorola MOTO X appears in leaked photo

The Motorola X Phone, confirmed to be the MOTO X and launching this summer, has appeared online in what may be the first of many leaked photos in the run-up to its commercial release. Phone Arena has posted a photo of what it alleges is the MOTO X. The phone has a standard appearance with no physical navigation buttons and a large Motorola logo in the top left corner. According to rumors, the phone has the following features:
- 4.7-inch 720p display
- 1.7 GHz dual-core processor
- 2GB of RAM
- 16 GB of internal memory
The phone pictured is of a Sprint-compatible device, but the MOTO X is expected to appear on other carriers as well, including AT&T. The hardware specifications are pedestrian compared to the top shelf devices released by Samsung, HTC, and LG, but Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside has previously suggested that the company would focus on other areas to promote the fabled X Phone. Woodside has said that the MOTO X will focus on enhanced sensors that will make the phone have excellent battery life and recognize actions to unlock certain features. This might be the first glance of that phone.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra takes on Galaxy Note 2 with slimmest Full HD screen

Sony Xperia Z Ultra is looking to take advantage of the fast growing market of large-screen smartphones taking on the likes of the Galaxy Note 2 and the Ascend Mate
Sony has just unveiled the new Sony Xperia Z Ultra, a 6.4-inch Full-HD smartphone that measures in at just 6.5mm but still manages to cram in a blistering 2.2GHz quad-core processor.

Samsung Galaxy S4 thrashes Apple iPhone 5 in battery-life test

Samsung has been boosted by a recent independent testing in the UK which found that its Galaxy S4 led the pack of current smartphones when it comes to battery life.
According to the testing conducted by Which?, the Korean electronics giant's flagship handset came up trumps in the battery-life stakes for across call time and internet browsing usage patterns.
The smartphone delivered an impressive 400 minutes of web browsing before its battery died. For voice calling it managed over 1000 minutes before giving up the ghost.
The Which? testing showed that the Apple iPhone 5 took the silver medal in both the internet access and voice calling stakes. However, at just under 500 minutes of call time on a single charge the Samsung handset was far ahead.

BlackBerry sold 6.8 million smartphones but lost $84 million last quarter

BlackBerry shipped 6.8 million smartphones and recorded a $84 million loss during the three months to June 1, as it struggles to turn around its fortunes.
The first of BlackBerry’s fiscal year was the first true referendum on how the new BlackBerry 10 smartphones have been received by consumers and business users—although the company didn’t break out sales figures for those phones.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra vs Galaxy Mega 6.3 vs Ascend Mate: specs comparison of the Goliaths

It is quite evident that Sony's newly-announced Xperia Z Ultraphablet literally dwarfs the competition, but not in size only, as was the case with the Galaxy Mega 6.3, but specswise as well.

Still, it is worth staging a battle of the Goliaths, or the phones with 6"+ displays, to show who's who in this up and coming market niche. If you are wondering where is the Galaxy Note II phablet - well, at 5.5" it is literally overshadowed by these monsters, and the Note 3with its rumored larger display seems to be a batter fit for a comparison when it gets announced.

Right off the bat we notice how much thinner the Xperia Z Ultra is than even the 8 mm Mega 6.3. At 6.5 mm it is the thinnest Full HD smartphone out there, and also just a tad heavier than the other two, despite the much larger screen, the glass chassis and the metal fram around the Triluminous display, which also has the largest pixel density of them all.

Design superiority aside, the Z Ultra also emerges victorious when it comes to sheer horsepower, with its 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, which will be melting the benchmark charts very soon. The only disadvantages it has before the other two is the lack of LED flash, and the smaller battery, which, however, is still able to provide above average endurance results, and even record audio playback at 120 uninterrupted hours.

When we add the ability for direct screen input with a regular pen or even a pencil, rather than a need for a dedicated stylus, the Z Ultra is clearly the winner here, despite that we don't have yet the all-important pricing scheme. What do you think?

Galaxy Mega 6.3 vs. Ascend Mate: Shadows of giants

Introduction

Back when phones were just phones, a couple of buttons and an earpiece were enough. Now we try to pump our entire lives through our smartphones and a big screen is a must. With the new 6+ inch phablets happy to oblige, pocket size is bigger than ever before.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3
 Huawei Ascend Mate
Two in particular - the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and the Huawei Ascend Mate - caught our eye as potential competitors, so we thought we'd let them take a few swings at each other and see which one is still standing at the end.
We should note that both of these are clearly midrange devices. They won't challenge the 5" 1080p flagships or premium phablets. The Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Ascend Mate go by the "big screen, passable specs" formula.
Here's a blow-by-blow report of how each phone is better than its competitor:

Sony Xperia Z Ultra: one phablet to rule them all (hands-on)

Sony's latest smartphone, an LTE-capable phablet rocking a massive 6.44-inch screen, is a powerful addition to the Xperia family. It's not only the first smartphone from Sony Mobile to pack Qualcomm's top-of-the-line Snapdragon 800 processor, it's also the biggest handset from the company.
Design
Based on the design language of the Xperia Z, the Z Ultra is a very attractive-looking gadget. It combines a metallic frame with tempered glass on both the front and rear, giving it a minimalistic, stylish appeal. During my brief time with the phone, I was immediately impressed by its build quality--it's as lovely as the Xperia Z and yet impossibly thin at 6.5mm (0.26 inch).
The tempered glass rear gives the handset a premium feel.

The large power button is how you tell it's a Xperia handset

Lately Sony has been pushing thin form factors as a main selling point in some of the latest products such as the Xperia Tablet Z, and the Z Ultra is no different. I still can't get over just how slim this phablet is. Sure, it's not the thinnest -- Huawei's Ascend P6 is a mere 6.18mm (0.24 inch) thick -- but the Z Ultra nonetheless represents a very impressive design achievement from Sony.

Also, while the handset's footprint is large, I found it surprisingly comfortable to hold with one hand. The Z Ultra weighs in at a hefty 212g (7.5 ounces), but nethertheless just doesn't feel heavy. Comparatively, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 weighs 198g (7 ounces) but its chassis is mostly made of plastic materials, which somehow doesn't quite impart the same level of luxury as the Z Ultra.
                                                        Ultra is bigger then Mega.
